I am Charles. I work with people who have more autonomy than they know what to do with — no one setting their goals, no one telling them which meeting to skip, and a growing sense that being busy and being useful have quietly stopped being the same thing.

The topics I keep returning to are the unglamorous ones. Saying no to someone senior without burning the relationship. Deciding what you are deliberately not going to find out. Keeping a team coherent when it never meets. Working out which parts of your job genuinely belong to a machine now, and which only look like they do.

I am not interested in productivity systems. Most people I work with have tried several. What actually changes things is a clear view of what you are accountable for and the nerve to let the rest go.
